Life and Education
Walter Lewis was born in Ottawa, Ontario on June 26, 1930. But around the age of 12 he lived in Victoria, British Columbia. For Walter’s 12th birthday he was asked what he wanted for his birthday. Walter from a young age was always fascinated by his uncle who had a plant nursery in the countryside. Walter told his dad that he wanted a greenhouse for his birthday, and he had received one. Walter’s uncle taught him how to grow roses from the cuttings, which later next summer Walter began selling his roses in Victoria.
Walter’s parents wanted him to become a dentist one day, so Walter went to Victoria College (University of Victoria) where he studied towards dentistry, but since he also was curious about botany and plants he took extra courses on the side. After his second-year of university he explained to his parents that he wished to pursue botany and become a botanist instead of a dentist. [1]
